UPDATE Week of June 29

SUMMERTIME

Love spending time with this guy
summer for the Fellows Program is often are busiest and most challenging seasons... but the work we do is hard to capture in UPDATE form...

Basically, it is hard work putting a Fellows Program together!

First of all, we need to find Fellows! RECRUITING is still going on, which is definitely made harder with COVID-19, social distancing, and the fact that graduates are scattered all over the place.

Second of all, we need to find our Fellows JOBS! This is actually going pretty well at the moment. We are following several strong leads, and we have several planes circling the landing strip.

On average it takes a minimum of five conversations to arrange a Fellows job. Multiply that by 12 and you get 72 conversations at MINIMUM! That is if everything goes smoothly.

Third of all, we need to find our Fellows HOST FAMILIES! Again, this typically takes a minimum of five conversations, plus education, orientation, and coordination.

Fourth of all, we need to nail down our PROGRAMMING! Every year we try to up the ante on the equipping our Fellows receive. With COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement we are having to do more re-imagining than ever before.

Fifth of all, we need FUNDRAISE! We have a relatively small budget, but it still needs supporters like you!

Sixth of all, we need to coordinate with our partner CHURCHES. You can imagine the number of conversations this can take! With our turbulent times - these conversations are even more challenging!

Seventh of all, we take the time to get EDUCATED ourselves! I'm learning a lot, particularly in doing the work of becoming an anti-racist. Here is one article:

a couple quotes from it:

"The actual foundation of racism is not ignorance or hate, but self-interest."

"the only thing inferior about black people is that we think there is something wrong with black people."

I read this earlier this year and I'm really excited about incorporating a female, black voice into our conversation in the fall. Lisa Sharon Harper rocks.

Most importantly, my back patio has become a place for me to get educated. This summer some friends have been kind enough to help me listen. Shout out to Nigel, Anthony, Jason, Curtis and Alvin!

the patio is always open

We hired HOPE Lawn Care to mow our yard this week - they did an awesome job.

These certainly are crazy times... the Summer is the season when I remember that we need a CITY to pull this program off!

UPDATE Week of June 22

THE WEEKLY FELLOWS UPDATE

the happiest man on earth Saturday night

We are kicking off this Update with a hearty CONGRATULATIONS to Fellows Alum Bryan Pardue and new member to the Fellows family (by marriage) Maddison (Maddie Bolthouse)

We celebrated in a COVID free backyard in Denver, Colorado.

What a night!

Jacob, Christian, Ned and Trent

Good old Clyde the Guide Godwin was the officiator. He was also the matchmaker! It is an amazingly cool God story how all this came about. God is good!

We had a couple of generations of Fellows in attendance. In the wedding party, there was Best Man, Fellows Alum, and brother to the groom Jacob Pardue!

There was also Fellows alums Christian McConnon, Trent Hancock and Garrett Briggs.

Sophie-Earle was also there as the date of Jacob!

Snuck this one - wish it was clearer

Jacob gives the best man speech

Bryan and Maddie couldn't resist sharing a few words
the newest happy couple with our most recent happy Fellows couple Trent and Jess Hancock

It was an honor to be in attendance. Having no official role, I had the opportunity to catch up with old friends and knock a few things off my list.

thursday...

Caught up with my college buddy Hayes Trotter - He picked the establishment. It was closed but I appreciated the sentiment. We ended up being a part of a Black Lives Matter Littleton style protest and then got drinks afterward to celebrate.

friday...

Early morning Colorado time
I jumped on the trail system and ran a little over 40 miles to finish off a 500 mile virtual race called Run the Ridge (a virtual run of the Blue Ridge Parkway)

first place!

I was going against (really with - it's a very fun and supportive virtual community) some tough competitors, but I was motivated so I pushed through the pain and finished the race in First Place!

feels good to be done
Winning gets me pretty much a whole heap of nothing in the grand scheme of things, but it was fun.

I cooled down the old legs with a six mile walk with my good friend and old teacher compatriot Gregg Tucker

One of my heroes
He and his wife are doing some amazing things in the spheres of race, equity, and poverty. It started in the Dominican Republic and now is expanding back here in the States. Check it out.

the old house
We stopped by the old house 1800 S Gilpin where Lia and I lived in the early 2000s

That evening I had tacos on the porch with my good friend and garage band mate Greg Trotter.

this was one of the highlights
Greg Trotter is another one of my heroes. A beloved teacher, father and husband...someone I'd like to be when I grow up. He remains incognito for reasons all his own.

saturday...

the one and only Rick Lawrence
I got to have a coffee on the hill with one of my favorite people Rick Lawrence! Two hours of conversation and we were just scratching the surface. Rick is a writer, speaker, editor, father, husband, and lover of Jesus. The iron in my life that has been sharpened - a lot of it has been sharpened by this man. check him out at

Getting our run on
Greg and I then met up to run around my favorite park in Denver - Washington Park - it is a truly special place. And what a perfect day!

the real Michael Jordan
I then grabbed lunch with another one of my mentors and heroes, Michael Jordan. Yes, friends, I know Michael Jordan - this one doesn't play basketball - but in terms of loving Jesus and singing - he is the GOAT.

I didn't have time, BUT, I couldn't resist cruising up the mountain just a bit.

I had a good reason. My great friend Tim Zandee just opened an art gallery and I needed to see it!

Tim has his own personalized masks for sale!
Tim is an outstanding nature photographer. I've had the fortune of joining him on a few of his excursions. Very thankful for this guy.

He is in beautiful Evergreen, Colorado. And also online!
Check him out!

I squeezed in a little single track mountain run...just had to...

Evergreen lives up to the name. How I love these mountains!

Then...it was game time!

Bryan and Maddie time!
The wedding went off without a hitch...actually one BIG HITCH!

ha!

sunday....

I almost missed my flight because my Google Calendar and Orbitz kept me in Eastern Standard Time so I thought I had two more hours than I really did!

But fortunately, I made my flight with 10 minutes to spare! whew!

good to be home
it really is good to be home...

Speaking of home!!!

TODAY IS OUR HOUSE'S 150th BIRTHDAY!

happy birthday!

the foundation brick
We were planning on having a huge party to celebrate - but - alas - big parties will have to wait - stay tuned!

Meanwhile back in the Dash!

We celebrated a birthday.

Happy Birthday Millie!
